About Me

On the planet since 1973. Living in sin with M since 1997 and honestly since 2002. Failing at baby-making since 2005. And whining about it here since 2008. Come on in and sit a spell. This train wreck never seems to end.

Racking up the Discover points

I called my RE's office today to get some reassurance that taking BCPs for 13 days should not over-suppress my ovaries. I just don't want them to get too comfortable that they don't want to wake up when I start stimming. If my FSH wasn't a little high (11.1) I don't think I would care nearly as much. The nurse reassured me that everything is fine so I'm not going to think about it anymore. She faxed my medication prescription in today and said that we qualify for a free pen of Gonal-f because we are self-pay. I love little surprises like this.

I spoke to the pharmacy and requested a Thursday (02/07) delivery. The meds require a signature and the Gonal-f needs to be refrigerated so somebody has to be home. My DH has a doctor appointment that day and I hate driving to work alone anyway (we carpool) so it seemed like a good work-from-home kind of day.

I was prepared for the meds to be expensive as we were given an estimate of between $2000 and $4000, but I guess I was hoping to be on the lower end. The total for today was $3659.63. I thought I should start keeping a running tally on the cost of our cycle somewhere on here to give those considering IVF an idea on what an average cycle entails. I plan to update the costs at the end of my blogs. (Yes, all eng.ineers are this anal.)
  • $ 315.00 - Initial consult with RE
  • $ 140.00 - Bloodwork
  • $ 3674.63 - Medications
  • $ 4129.63 - Total as of 02/01/08

Yikes I got a little scared because I was not told to keep my Gonal-F in the refrigerator, only the cetrolide. I went and read the package and it says "Upon dispensing, the product may be stored by the patient at 36-46F until the expiration date, or at 68-77F for up to one month or until expiration date, whichever occurs first." Huh? I've been keeping mine at room temperature (when the package arrived the Gonal-F wasn't on ice, just the cetrolide). I hope it's okay.

I can't believe you're starting stims so soon... it's so exciting!

Thanks for the info, Amy. I am going to call them on Monday just to make sure now that I didn't mix something up. It sounds like if you start using (upon dispensing) the meds Feb 1 and they expire on July 1, they should only be stored room temp. until March 1 and then not be used. If they are stored in the refrigerator after you start using them, they would be good until the expiration July 1. It seems like it doesn't matter until you start using them. Sorry to scare you.

Yup, we are both on our way now!!

That's great that you got the Gonal-F pen for free! We do have to hold on to all the good little surprises along the way. That's incredible that the meds bill still came out so close to the high end of your estimate. The monetary part of all of this is hard. As far as the BCPs I think it's good to just let it go for now. My DH says we have to trust the docs some time, but it's really hard. LOL

No worries, I just stuck my meds in the fridge just in case... LOL! I'm sorry yours ended up costing so much. Do you kno w your protocol yet? Thank goodness for small blessings (free gonal-F pens)!

I read a post on FF that asked if people got oversuppressed from taking BCP's (specifically women with slightly elevated FSH - like you and me [11.7]) and I FREAKED out! ...

then I remembered that in Dec between my injects cycles I took BCP's for 10 days to rid a cyst and the cycle following BCP's I had 9 follies developing ... from less than 75iu of Follistim! So I'm trying to stop worrying about that too.

So glad you got the free vial. And glad you're calculating your cycle I too am an engineer and that anal!

You're so on your way!

Thanks, ladies!

a~I don't know the daily amounts yet, but here is what was ordered: gonal-f (3 x 900IU pens + 1 free 300IU pen) and Menopur (20 vials) with Ganirelix (3 injections). (For my IUI, I only used 9 vials of Menopur and 1 Ganirelix total).

Jen~Yup, turning over the trust is a hard thing to do so I keep reminding myself that this guy has great stats and sees different cases every day. I am only basing my worries on things I have read so I think he wins out on this one. LOL

Polly~Ahhhh, a fellow engineer. We are a breed all our own, huh? LOL. My DH is one too so we are doubly cursed. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with BCPs. It really makes me feel alot better.

Thanks, Claire.
