About Me

My photo
On the planet since 1973. Living in sin with M since 1997 and honestly since 2002. Failing at baby-making since 2005. And whining about it here since 2008. Come on in and sit a spell. This train wreck never seems to end.

Weekly torture

I grew up in a small farming town with less than a thousand people. Kids there still ride their bikes to school on the street and park them outside the school without locks. Hell, most people don't even lock their car or house doors. Main Street (which is really named Broadway, but nobody uses street names anyway so it doesn't really matter) is still made up of the original red bricks. Everybody knows everybody and everybody knows everybody else's business. There is nothing to do, yet there is a weekly 8 page newspaper that details the happenings of the town - you know the important stuff like nursing home birthdays and the school lunch menu.

I stopped getting the paper a few years ago when I stopped recognizing most of the faces and names. My mom got me a subscription for Christmas this past year and this weekly arrival has become a bit like self-inflicted torture.

I bypass the "happening" news of school board proceedings and the 2 full pages of school sports pictures and other activities as I head straight to the "Births" section to see who the latest lucky parents are. Two weeks ago, it was my first boyfriend - the first boy I ever kissed. He married about 18 months ago and novel concept that he now has a son. Last week it was a boy - yes, boy as I used to change his diapers. He is now the parent of his third child (first boy) at the ripe old age of 21. Today it was a couple who were both still in junior high after I graduated. It's like a scab that just has to be picked and I can't stop myself from looking every week. I secretly hope to find someone else my age or older just having their first, but it hasn't happened yet this year. Of course the first New Year's baby wasn't born until after Valentine's Day so January doesn't really count, right? LOL.

Hey, but without this paper how would I know that 20 years ago this week I placed first in the 200 meter dash in the junior high NENAC conference track meet. Yes, my friends, it is there in black and white. I couldn't make this "news" up if I wanted to.

Congrats on winning first place in the 200 meter dash in the junior high NENAC conference track meet 20 years ago. That's awesome that you are still in the news!!! Can't wait to see what you did 20 years ago next week!

It is like picking a scab isn't it? That's a great way to describe it. I do the same thing with my college alumni class notes that come every quarter. Everyone is my age, but I torture myself by seeing how many children they all have. It appears that three is the new two among my former classmates.

i hope you'll be in the Births section of your hometown newspaper very soon.
